The territory of Abruzzo is for two thirds by mountains, with the typical characteristics of central Appennino mountains with many peaks and gentle slopes with rounded profiles. But some peaks of these mountains, like the eastern side of Sirente were vertical cliffs, pinnacles and peaks reminiscent more of the Alps
On the mountain of Gran Sasso, at 2700 meters altitude is the Calderone glacier, the only of the Apennine.
On the sides of the main Apennine Abruzzo there are fewer chains, connected by valleys of erosive origin, as the Valley of Sagittarius. Other high mountain valleys are on the Maiella, the mountain of Gran Sasso, on the Monti Gemelli (Salinello Gorge), the Sirente (Gole di Celano).
Many also plateaus, used as pastures, such as the Campo Imperatore, the Rocche and Five Miles.
All upland areas are characterized by unspoiled nature, protected by environmental level 3 national parks, a regional park and many oases and regional reserves.
